Treatments - Removable appliances

Removable appliances can be used in a number of tooth moving as well as tooth holding procedures. These appliances are made by a skilled technician from a acrylic plate with wires coming from the side which grip the teeth to keep the brace in place . These appliances conforms to the relevant essential requirements specified in Annex 1 of the Medical Device Directive and the UK Medical Devices Regulations. You should handle them with the utmost care.

Unless otherwise instructed, you should wear your removable appliance all the time except when playing sports and cleaning the brace. You should keep the brace in a hard plastic container for protection when not wearing it, and never put the brace in a tissue. You may forget it and throw it away.

Do not play with the brace in your mouth – this can break the brace. It might feel strange initially, but you will soon get used to it. The mouth also tends to produce more saliva than usual, but this tends to go after a few days. You will be surprised how quickly you adapt and soon no one will notice any difference in you speech.

If you experience any irritation of the cheek, gum or tongue, the orthodontist can adjust the appliance to make it more comfortable. Replace a lost or broken brace at the earliest opportunity. The more you wear the appliance, the quicker your treatment should take.

In the same way as you keep your teeth clean, you should also clean your brace by using the solution and instructions given to you by the orthodontist.
