About Braces

What is Orthodontics?

“Orthodontics” comes from two Greek words, “orthos” meaning right or correct and “dons” meaning tooth.

Orthodontics is a specialised branch of dentistry that involves the diagnosis, prevention and treatment of dental and facial irregularities (malocclusions/bad bite). The appliances that are used to correct these problems, are called “braces”.

Malocclusions can be inherited and can manifest as:

  • Crowded or spaced teeth
  • Irregular positions or ectopic teeth
  • Extra or missing teeth
  • Cleft lip/palate

Malocclusions can also be acquired or caused by known factors such as:

  • Thumb sucking
  • Tongue thrusting
  • Dental disease
  • Pre-mature loss of baby teeth
  • Accidents and injuries
  • Some medical problems

Braces and other orthodontic procedures can be used to correct malocclusions, resulting in a harmonious relationship between the teeth and the jaws and leaving us to enjoy a healthy and attractive smile.

Children and adults should visit the orthodontist for a specialized analysis of the teeth, bite and jaws because orthodontists can help prevent, diagnose and treat these irregularities.
